Ballati!’ – a trip through Italian folk music
What is a Tarantella? How do you dance it? Where does it come from? A country’s repertoire of traditional music is a very important part of its culture, layered through centuries of knowledge, experiences, sounds and instruments.
Co.As.It. – Museo italiano is proud to host this one-of-a-kind event. Traditional Italian musician Francesco Bufarini presents four seminars on the culture of Italian folk music, its sounds, rituals and peculiarities. Join us in this journey through stories and colours, accompanied by live music, videos and special guests. Don’t miss out.
The four seminars are:
- 12 July, 6.30pm/8.00pm - Abruzzo and Marche: Rituals, Celebrations and sounds from Central Italy
- 26 July, 6.30pm/8.00pm - Puglia: the pizzica, the taranta and the ancient pagan traditions of Puglia
- 17 August, 6.30pm/8.00pm - Calabria and Sicilia: the ancient sounds from the parched South
- 31 August, 6.30pm/8.00pm -Traditional tales. An exploration of the stories which emerged from researching traditional music among migrants, craftsmen and farmers
Francesco Bufariniis an Italian folk musician with 12 years of experience in folk bands and international festivals. In recent years he travelled extensively across Italy to discover many unknown traditional tunes and dances, learned directly by elderly folk musicians. Francesco has a degree in music (vocals), is a multi-instrumentalist and has performed in dance classes, workshops and exhibitions. In Melbourne he performs with “Coppola Republic” and “Santa Taranta” and runs a folk dance workshop.
