Andiamo is a refreshing memoir about the migration of Italians from Sicily to Australia. The author, Angelo Indovino and his family migrated from their native Valguarnera, in the province of Enna, to Melbourne. They found themselves in a new place with people who spoke a strange language and observed different customs. Valguarnera’s ancient Carrapipano cultural heritage is put to the test in modern Melbourne. The Australian Dream pulled with the force of a strong magnet, promising material wealth, but also harboring the danger of being hurled into a cultural void.
The pride of the Italian immigrants is apparent in every page of Andiamo. A balanced mix of the history of Sicily, Valguarnera, and migration; it tells us about the many traditions that the Carrapipani brought to Australia: their dialect, the Valguarnera Social Club, its Founding Fathers and their celebrations like La Tavola di San Giuseppe, Carnevale, etc. Indovino’s work is a celebration of the legacy of his heritage. It documents a unique time and a singular experience generously shared with the rest of humanity. It is a convincing testimony to the will and grit of the Carrapipani people whose experience deserves to be remembered and shared.
We look forward to seeing you at Co.As.It. Museo Italiano on 26 May.
