Diaspore italiane - Italy in Movement

A not-to-be-missed opportunity for Italian Australian culture and Italian Australian studies, and not only... The opportunity to converse with other Italian diasporas and other diasporas in Italy. Deadline for proposals: 20 October.

DIASPORE ITALIANE – ITALY IN MOVEMENT. A conference on three continents (Australia, United States, Italy), a collaboration between CO.AS.IT. Melbourne; the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, Queens College (City University of New York) and the Galata Museo del Mare e delle Migrazioni (Genova), which will host the new National Italian Emigration Museum.

The first session of the conference, “Living Transcultural Spaces” will take place in Melbourne on 4-8 April 2018. The second session, “Transnationalism and Questions of Identity,” will take place in New York on 1-3 November 2018; the third and last session, “Between Immigration and Historical Amnesia”, will be in Genova on 27-29 June 2019.

The first multidisciplinary conference of its kind, “Diaspore Italiane” aims to explore notions of Italianness and Italian identity in all contexts defined by mobility: as well as Italian diasporic communities all over the world and Italian migration (including the “new mobilities”), the conference will also explore Italian colonial history and Italy’s current relationship with its emigration and with immigrant communities in Italy. The conference therefore is also an attempt to gauge the future of Italianness, within a wider objective, namely that its results may be generalised beyond Italian contexts and may help focus the unique contribution that migration and diaspora studies can make to models of dialogical rationality and civil coexistence for the 21st century.
