Book Launch of "A new Italian 'Exodus' to Australia?"

Italian migrants and their descendants in Australia have significantly grown both in number and importance since the ‘50s and ‘60s, when the mass migration process from Italy started.

A new Italian 'Exodus' to Australia? is a research that analyses the phenomenon from 2004 and 2005 onwards, when the Federal Government decided to introduce changes to the Working Holiday Visa, making it more accessible by travellers coming from many countries, including Italy.

The research has been conducted by Dr. Riccardo Armillei (Deakin University) with the supervision of Professor Bruno Mascitelli (Swinburne University) and aims at making a clear picture of the reasons and expectations that younger Italian generations have when migrating to Australia to study, work and sometimes stay.

The research has been committed by Comites Victoria & Tasmania and has been possible with the financial backing of the Italian Foreign Ministry (Ministero degli Affari Esteri e Cooperazione Internazionale). Comites believes this will be an important instrument to help planning and activating useful resources, like professional development and work induction for those who, despite coming to Australia with a Working Holiday or other time-limited Visas, want to make the most of their stay.

The book launch will see the attendance of Hon. Marco Fedi, Italian Consul General Marco Maria Cerbo, Comites President Francesco Pascalis and the authors of the research.

Dr Riccardo Armillei worked for the UNESCO Chair team and the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI) as an Associate Research Fellow.

Prof. Bruno Mascitelli is an Associate Professor in European Studies at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne Australia. He has co-authored or co-edited over 15 books on various international topics.
