Andiamo is a refreshing memoir about the migration of Italians from Sicily to Australia. The author, Angelo Indovino and his family migrated from their native Valguarnera, in the prov­ince of Enna, to Melbourne. They found themselves in a new place with people who spoke a strange language and observed different customs. Valguarnera’s ancient Carrapipano cul­tural heritage is put to the test in modern Melbourne. The Australian Dream pulled with the force of a strong magnet, promising material wealth, but also harboring the danger of being hurled into a cultural void.

 

The pride of the Italian immigrants is apparent in every page of Andiamo. A balanced mix of the history of Sicily, Valguarnera, and migration; it tells us about the many traditions that the Carrapipani brought to Australia: their dialect, the Valguarnera Social Club, its Founding Fa­thers and their celebrations like La Tavola di San Giuseppe, Carnevale, etc. Indovino’s work is a celebration of the legacy of his heritage. It documents a unique time and a singular experi­ence generously shared with the rest of humanity. It is a convincing testimony to the will and grit of the Carrapipani people whose experience deserves to be remembered and shared.
