The Mediterranean Diet: Food, Science and Health describes the important role that the Mediterranean diet plays in disease prevention and good health. It also describes how these benefits can be lost with acculturation and Westernisation of the diet. This is a timely reminder for migrants to Australia and other countries which have a predominantly Western style diet! The book reviews the history, components and principles of the Mediterranean diet and presents the compelling scientific evidence for employing it in the prevention and treatment of the obesity epidemic and associated chronic diseases plaguing many Western countries.

Dr Anthony Mariani was born in Tocco da Casauria (Pescara) and migrated to Australia at the age of 7. After attending the University of Melbourne and training at St Vincent’s hospital, he further trained in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Miami (Florida). Dr Mariani works as a Consultant Physician in General Medicine and Gastroenterology both privately and in the public system. Dr Mariani, a past President and current Committee member of the Italian Medical Society of Victoria, has written, broadcast and lectured widely for the Italian and wider community.
