Diplomatic Archive

The Diplomatic Archive comprises around 8,000 records of correspondence and reports between Italian Consular representatives in Australia and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome from 1856 to 1947.

The records, all on microfilm, document the forging of links between Italy and Australia, particularly in the field of cultural relations. The latter part of the collection covers the rise of Fascism and its influence on the Italian-Australian community. You can search for relevant documents by consulting either the Diplomatic Archives Index (1856-1899) or the IHS Diplomatic Archives database (1900-1947), which provide details of dates, names and locations of senders and receivers, as well as the subject of each document. Summaries of individual records are also available.

The collection can be searched here.
