Newspaper Collection

The Italian Historical Society holds a collection of Italian newspapers.

The collection has copies and originals of over 40 Italian newspaper and periodical titles dating back to the 1890s. Both Italian and Australian publications are represented. The size and diversity of the Italian migrant community from the early 1900s is reflected in the variety of titles published by businesses, the Catholic church, and cultural and political groups. Many were produced in both English and Italian. Their content reflects the changing concerns of the community through the Depression and two world wars.

Of special interest is the Sydney-based Oceania: Rivista Settimanale Italo-Australiana of 1914, a 1955 edition of Il Canguro = The Kangaroo from Perth, and the Melbourne anti-fascist newspaper Il Risveglio of 1945.
